DIY Tie Dye

DIY Tie Dye

There is great satisfaction in doing it yourself!

So many of you loved the Tie Dye $5 t-shirt I posted on Instagram and answered yes to my polls to see how I made it so I thought I would write a quick blog post about it!

For starters, I admit that I am not the craftiest person, haha BUT this was fun to do and pretty simple! I watched a couple of YouTube videos and thought to myself, if they can do it, I can too! I don’t like to spend a lot on season trends because things go in and out of style so quickly and this is so inexpensive!

I was at my local Walmart and picked up a Mens large t-shirt for $5 in their George brand. I figured if I messed it up, it wasn’t that big of a deal. I then went to look for bleach and they were all sold out. Figures as everyone has bought out bleach due to Covid. I then went to my backup plan which was Clorox cleaner with bleach. I also picked up a pack or rubber bands and went on way.

I came home and got started right away!

Supplies required:

1.      Colored t-shirt

2.      Fork

3.      Bleach or bleach alternative

4.      Rubber bands

5.      Gloves

6.      Garbage bag

Below are the steps I followed:

1.      Wash your t-shirt and leave it wet. Make sure you ring out the excess water.

2.      Take a fork and spin your t-shirt from the center until it looks like a donut.

3.      Take 4-5 rubber bands and tie the t-shirt up in a criss cross form. You don’t need it to be perfect and this is where my type A kicked in so I re-did this part about 4 times, haha

4.      Lay down a garbage bag because you want to protect your surface. I used our mudroom sink and still had a garbage bag underneath.

5.      Put on your gloves as you will be handling bleach.

6.      Take the Clorox bleach and start zig-zagging across one side of the t-shirt. I didn’t overly add bleach as I didn’t want a super tie dye shirt.

7.      Flip it over and do the same thing on the other side.

8.      Wrap up the sides of the garbage bag and leave it to sit for 15-20 minutes

9.      Flip it over and let it sit for another 15-20 minutes

10.  Take the rubber bands off and rinse out the shirt with cold water. (Don’t forget to wear your gloves!)

11.  Put in the washer on delicate wash in cold water. Hang to dry overnight and Voila! You have your very own $5 tie dye shirt!

I am pretty proud of myself haha. I don’t normally do any DIY projects and this was fun and easy to do!
